February 2 marks mid way between the Winter solstice and the Spring equinox and represents the beginning of Spring in the Northern hemisphere ... and here in Bideford.

Whether you are pagan, Christian or American will tell which name you give to 2 February.  The Celts celebrate the festival of Imbolc or St Brigid's Day, the Christians Candlemas and in North America today is Groundhog Day.

We have woken up to a dull, wet and grey day here in Bideford.  If folklore is to be believed then Spring is here to stay:

If Candlemas be fair and bright

Winter will have another flight

If Candlemas be cloud and rain

Winter will be gone and not come again

A farmer should on Candlemas day

Have half his corn and half his hay

On Candlemas day if thorns hang a drop

You can be sure of a good pea crop

Happy Spring time Bideford!

It almost makes me glad it's such a grey, miserable day out there! Roll on beach days :D
