This is a really lovely place. Years ago I remember watching local bands playing live here - it was a great venue. The Pannier Market has so much potential, but I just don't think it is appreciated as much as it could be. The Butchers Row of independently run shops is really varied, and some come and go, but they are all interesting in their own way. Its a shame, but I don't think people are either prepared to walk up the High Street to it, or are aware that its even there. Come on Bideford, lets use and appreciate our 'jewels in the crown', it would be awful to see them go to waste!
This is a good traditional pannier market, with a variety of stalls. Unfortunately, because of its location is not visited as much as it should be. The Butchers Row part, has a really good selection of little independently run shops, there is a butchers, fishmongers, record shop, and you can buy locally made arts and crafts, or cheap nik naks and get your watch repaired too.I would say its worth visiting here, rather than driving to Atlantic Village.
The pannier market is situated nearly at the top of the town, which I think probably puts a lot of people off visiting. However once you arrive it is like stepping back in time. The arcade, which runs just below the main pannier market, has lots of individual shops ranging from butchers and fishmongers, to toys and witchcraft items! The pannier market is open on Tuesday and Saturday, but it is a little disappointing as the number of stalls setting up is dwindling. I still love the WI stall cakes though, which I can pass off as homemade!
At christmas the pannier market area is put to good use with Christmas fayres and carol singing, but again this area could be used far more profitably throughout the week if only somebody would take advantage of the lovely setting.
