Maddie Southorn
Friday 19th
March at The
Plough in Torrington.
Maddie Southorn is an original
songwriter, an accomplished pianist and in possession of a superb
voice. She defies any easy pigeonhole. She
weaves songs that are poignant and nostalgic, songs inspired by
looking out of the window on long journeys at changing landscapes and
glimpsed lives and filled with characters as “poignantly
real as any that the late Dennis Potter ever invented.”
Living
Tradition.
Her music has invited comparisons to Suzanne Vega and Kate Bush.
The haunting
piano arrangements display at times an almost classical purity
and
are
enhanced by long-time musical collaborator Katherine Martin on the
cello.
Her first two
releases, Unlikely
Prom Queen and
Hollow,
garnered praise and airplay both nationally and internationally, and
her third album, The
Pilgrim Soul,
released by widely respected label Fellside Recordings, prompted
Radio
2’s
Mike Harding to
pronounce it “one
of the best albums of 2005.”
She is no stranger to The Plough
having shared the stage previously with Seth Lakeman and Eddi Reader
and most recently, with Kirsty McGee and The Hobopop Collective.
Maddie is
currently working on her fourth album. This time it’s completely
independent as she’s
not only writer and performer but also engineer and producer in her
own studio.
“The
kind of stuff that could find itself resting proudly on a million
coffee tables worldwide.”
Decode
“Reminiscent
of the great Joni Mitchell.”
BBC
Wiltshire
“Imagine
the contented glow you get sitting comfortably in front of a fire,
thoughtfully reflecting on moments and evocations arising within and
out of the flames.”
Net
Rhythms
“An
excellent contemporary slant on the folk tradition.” Maverick
