WHERE'S THE CROSSING GONE ON BIDEFORD QUAY?
By biddy_blogger | Saturday, October 10, 2009, 12:30
I was half way across the main road on the quay in Bideford this week (opposite Chic-O-Land) when I realised the crossing island had gone! I was stranded with cars whizzing either side of me.
What happened? Is it coming back?
Comments
Either bring back the crossing or take away the bumpy ramp bits!

ReportActually, the Pelican did not replace the island crossing. The pelican and it's predecessor were installed years ago.
3 crossing island were removed to make way for the bike race. Nearthe bottom of High Street, near the bottom of Bridgeland Street, and at the bottom of Chingswell Street. Two of these are currently sporting cones where the islands should be. Why there are no similar cones at the High Street/Quay site is a mystery.
When the High Street/Quay crossing was first installed a few years ago it was hailed as a major safety improvement. The continued absence of this crossing point suggests that safety id no longer a priority.

ReportI've been told that the traffic islands along the Quay were all removed prior to the cycle race to prevent accidents. Obviously, a few cyclists spending a few minutes speeding through Bideford are far more important than the rest of us that live here all year round. I shall be checking next week to see when they're going to be replaced.

ReportAhh, OK. They ought to move the ramp bits then because it still looks like it's ok to cross there. Someone partially sighted may come a cropper!

ReportThis is exactly why Craddock has been complaining. They have taken away the traffic island you are referring to and replaced it with a pelican crossing further up the road, metres away from a mini roundabout entrance/exit.
You now have to walk at least 50metres to access a safe crossing point if you wish to cross from the bottom of the High Street to the Quay.
I bet the person who designed this is not a pedestrian!
