No Smoking Day 2011
Around a million smokers will be trying to quit on No Smoking Day and Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service (DSFRS) are adding another good reason to your list of reasons to give up.
Careless disposal of cigarettes and other smoking products is the single biggest killer in house fires across the country and causes over a third of all accidental dwelling fire fatalities.
If you are not ready to go cold turkey then the Fire Service give this advice:
• Make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished. Put it out, right out!
• Fit a smoke alarm and test it weekly. A working smoke alarm means you are more than twice as likely to survive an accidental house fire and can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 999
• Never smoke in bed. Take care when you’re tired. It’s very easy to fall asleep while your cigarette is still burning and set furniture alight
• Avoid drugs and alcohol when smoking. It’s easy to lose your concentration when using any sort of drugs or drinking alcohol, combined with cigarettes and this could be lethal
• Never leave lit cigarettes, cigars or pipes unattended - they can easily overbalance as they burn down
• Use a proper, heavy ashtray that can’t tip over easily and is made of a material that won’t burn.

Obesity alone costs the NHS a staggering £4.3 BILLION a year - and I remember a time when four thousand three hundred million pounds seemed like a lot of money.
If one is happy to treat one's own lifestyle induced aliments WITHOUT the help of our first-rate FREE national health service, then carry on smoking, drinking and eating to excess.
However if even one visit to your local GP with complaints of shallow breathing, high blood pressure, depression, diabetes etc etc is undertaken then the reason the essay was not published should become clear - these freely chosen lifestyle choices clearly have a negative effect on society and any material which promotes them will not be published.
Fundamentally I agree that we are free to choose the life we wish to lead but responsibility to public interest is paramount and as Auden wrote:
"Choice of attention - to pay attention to this and ignore that - is to the inner life what choice of action is to the outer. In both cases, a man is responsible for his choice and must accept the consequences, whatever they may be".

ReportA few weeks ago I submitted a weekly essay to the North Devon Journal entitled "In Praise of Smoking, Drinking and Obesity". Unfortunately the title was cut to "Smoking, Drinking and Obesity". Consequently, it seems no-one read it because there was no replies in the letters page the following week.
Basically it was decrying the nagging by government and the NHS of people to change their freely chosen lifestyle.
