Anita Wardell
Anita Wardell takes jazz standards and reworks them in her own inimitable style, celebrating the arists that have continued to inspire her for many years. Her singing is exciting and breathtaking. She is noted for her mesmerizing and captivating vocal improvisations and lyrics to instrumental solos – ‘vocalese’. Wardell is a musician who uses the voice as her instrument, displaying precision and agility mixed with heartfelt emotion.
In 2006 she received the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best of Jazz category. This coupled with the release of her most recent album ‘Kinda Blue’ are now propelling Anita into the major artist arena.
Her longstanding musical relationship with pianist Robin Aspland continues with this special duo performance, which marks a welcome return to The Plough for the woman described by The Guardian as a ‘model of the jazz singer’s art’.
"World-class vocalist with the ability to delve deep into the meanings of the lyrics of the great jazz songbooks, and then to improvise over them with fluency, fluidity and a horn-like intonation, accompanied by the piano artistry of Robin Aspland."
