Bideford's Street Pastors add a new non-offensive weapon to their arsenal this week..... LOLLIPOPS!  During the four Saturday nights patrolled in Bideford so far, the Street Pastors have been instrumental in calming 3 aggressive situations, given practical support to 9 vulnerable people, removed over 100 bottles and glasses from the streets and given away 21 pairs of flip flops to bare footed women who might otherwise injure their feet on broken glass still remaining.   Street Pastors patrol from 10 pm to 4 am to care, listen and help. They are all volunteers from local churches and not connected to the police or any other statutory authority.   From this Saturday they will carry a supply of lollipops to offer the clubbers on their way home. In many other towns, this simple and fun idea has been shown to considerably reduce noisy and disruptive incidents on the streets in the early hours of the morning.  Coordinator, Duncan Withall says, "We will do whatever it takes to keep people safe and happy on Bideford's Streets."

What a great idea.  Bideford really needs this help.  It's great for people to go out and have a good time but with such heavy drinking there's serious fallout.  The flip flops ... brilliant!
