As the rainy Summer Holidays pan out in front of us it's time to share our favourite places in Bideford.

What are your forever favourites?  Which cafe would you recommend to friends?  Is there only one hairdresser you would ever go to?

What are those hidden summertime gems you'd like to share?

I have made a list of my top ten Bideford hot spots - add your favourites below.

  1. The Burton Art Gallery and Museum.  For a little town (and a little museum) this gallery space has a lot to offer.  My forever favourite here is the treasure trove.  I dream of unearthing a pot of gold like the one at the Burton!  There are regular antiques sessions and children's workshops, good exhibitions and a wonderful French cafe too!
  2. The Pannier Market!  Yes, controversial I know with all the moaning that goes on.  It is always a walk up the hill and Butcher's row is going from strength to strength.
  3. Westard Ho! Arcades.  Well, when it's raining and it's the school holidays we want a bit of a thrill in our lives.  Mrs B's is the best as when you are all arcaded out you can pop to the bar, nip upstairs to the pool tables and put on some great 80's tunes on the juke box!
  4. The Boathouse in Instow.  After a stroll in the dunes on Instow beach the Boathouse serves a little of what you fancy; tasty beer and the most delicious seafood!
  5. Fresh Fish from Dan the Fishman - For fresh fish on Friday you can't beat Dan the Fishman's delicious offerings from his traditional market barrow in Mill Street.  Chuck a coupla prawns on the barbie for that summertime vibe!

  6. Cafe Life. If it's the continental feel you're after then head down to Cafe Life on the Quay in Bideford.  Sit outside sipping a latte and you could be anywhere on the Med (just add sunshine!)
  7. The Milky Way.  For a good family day out with thrills thrown in you can't beat the Milky Way out at Higher Clovelly.  Birds of prey, our local celeb Merlin off the telly and rollercoasters among the attractions here.  Should be on everyone's summer holiday to do list.
  8. The Big Sheep.  Of course you can't miss a trip to the Big Sheep either.  Sheep racing, pony, train and fairground rides, lovely food and yes, Dads, a brewery!!
  9. Torridge District Council.  Not just for bin collections and dog poo complaints!  Torridge always have a great summer holiday arts and leisure programme to keep everyone busy in the summer months.
  10. Freebird.  Get yourself some wheels - skateboards, inline skates, bicycles - this lovely local shop has all you need to get moving this summer.  Bike sales and repairs, cool clothing and skate gear.

The Big Sheep has a new farm shop which I reckon will be well worth a look - it is stocking lots of veg grown on the Big Sheep allotments. It's open every day and there's free parking. You don't need to go into the attractions to get to the shop - but hey, while it's raining why not? http://tinyurl.com/2fkbdgd

A great place if the weather's not so nice is the Waterfront Inn in Westward Ho! The kids can play in the play area, there's good food and beer for the grown ups.
