BIDEFORD FESTIVAL OF PIPING & DRUMMING 2010

Lone Piper to kick off festival - Last year the Bideford Festival of Piping & Drumming introduced a new feature - The 11am Lone Piper. “Edinburgh Castle is famous for it’s one o’clock gun and we wanted to go one step further by having an 11am Piper on each day of the Festival” said event organiser Mike Harper. “Each day a different piper is invited to play by the Kingsley Statue – a roll of honour will be created and hopefully this will become something of a Bideford tradition.”

Massed Pipes & Drums will be returning to Bideford on Carnival Day 11th September
Pipers and Drummers from all over the south of England will be in Bideford for a weekend of piping and drumming related activities.
On Friday 10th September there is a concert by the celtic rockers ‘James Robertson and Friends’ at the Pollyfield Centre. Starting at 8pm – tickets are £6 in advance available from Mike Harper on 01237 422477 mike@rockbymail.co.uk or £7.50 on the night.
On Saturday evening the pipe bands will be taking part in Bideford Carnival (starting at 6pm). After the Carnival the pipe bands will assemble into the Massed Pipes & Drums and will parade on the Quay, a now traditional feature of Bideford Carnival Day.
This year the Massed Band will pay tribute to ‘Cadet 150’, the Cadet Forces 150th anniversary celebration. They will be playing a number of well known favourites including ‘Scotland the Brave’, ‘Cock o’ the North’ and ‘The Rowan Tree’, before finishing with the ever popular ‘Highland Cathedral’. Taking the salute as ‘Chieftain of the Gathering’ will be Lord Burnett, the former MP for Torridge & West Devon.
Pipers & Drummers will again be on Bideford Quay on Sunday morning for a more informal get together. They will be playing a variety of tunes from 11am for an hour or so.
