When walking over Bideford Bridge I have often pondered on the memorial inscribed John Richard Pine-Coffin.

My friend tells me a funny tale of a cake decoration gone wrong.  On ordering a birthday cake the instructions to the baker were to write in icing "Happy Birthday Nanny".  Nanny was allergic to nuts so the additional instructions were 'no nuts' in the cake.  Of course you can guess what happened and when it came to candle blowing out time Nanny was presented with a beautiful cake inscribed "Happy Birthday Nanny No Nuts"!

We were wondering if a similar thing happened when John Richard's family were arranging his funeral?  Did they just want a pine coffin to lay him to rest in?

There are lots of funny cake mistakes on the website snopes.com  and cake wrecks - how can people be so silly?  Well worth a look if you are in need of a giggle.
