Should Bideford Ban Big Bins or Reward Recyclers?

Eric Pickles, Communities Secretary, has announced this week that Labour plans to tax household rubbish have been scrapped under the new Conservative/LibDem Government.

Instead the Government is planning to introduce rewards for recycling.

In an article in yesterday's Guardian Eric Pickles writes:

We were out in Windsor and Maidenhead yesterday, helping to launch the

country's first-ever council-wide recycling reward scheme. The beauty

of this scheme is its simplicity. It's just like collecting loyalty

card points. People sign up, their bin gets weighed, and points are

added onto their account. Those points can then be cashed in at over a

hundred local businesses including Marks & Spencer, Coffee Republic

and Cineworld, or donated to local schools.

Reward rather than punishment seems to be the way forward in all areas of life in these civilised times but will it work?  Is this going to cost us more in terms of manpower and equipment?

Should the Government be concentrating more on reducing the amount of disposable packaging from higher up in the food chain instead?

We used to live in Cornwall and we had a private company collecting our recyclables. They were run as a charity and they took EVERYTHING which was recyclable.

Remember that our recycling collectors SELL our recyclable waste! What's to stop anyone setting up a private company and doing it properly - and collecting from homes where people are not able to take stuff to a recycling centre.

I do agree that residents are already paying for it! In Old Town there are no big bins but I do have to question recyclers because they don't take cardboard and they are very picky about recycling items (eg:plastic milk tops, glass, cardboard) and items that are perfectly good to be recycled....heck I AM sensible about what I know is recyclable materials! To get rid of it I am told to take a bus to Bideford recycling centre (a bus with a few huge bags???)

Some areas of Bideford and their green wheelie bins only accept garden refuse (I know as I used to have a green wheelie bin) by all means reward me for recycling seeing that the local collection is far too picky with what it collects and leaves me to dispose of recyclable materials in my dustbin

I am glad that the governement are not going to charge for taking away rubbish.
It would only result in more fly tipping - let's face it, if you can't afford to pay for rubbish disposal you are either going to burn it, tip it or leave it somebody else's bin!
