play in our local environment.
Organised
by Torridge District Council Officer Amanda Wycherley and funded by
the Torridge Action Group for Sustainability (TAGS), Brigit addressed
an assembly of 200 pupils before talking to smaller groups of
children in their classrooms. They learnt all about bees and how
important they are for our environment, and Brigit
explained the importance of (and difference between) honey bees, bumble bees and solitary bees, the problems they face and what we can
all do to help them.
Brigit
said, “I love being here in this part of Devon. Perhaps because the
natural environment is so wonderful, the people are too! Certainly,
the children I have been talking to today have been very receptive,
excellent listeners and have asked some very insightful questions.
They are our future and their obvious awareness of the importance of
their local environment is wonderful in children so young and a real
credit to their parents and school.”
Torridge
District Council’s Lead Member for Youth, Roger Johnson added, “It
would be easy for the young people in Torridge to take everything we
have all around us for granted, but having listened to some of the
youngsters at the East the Water Primary School clearly this is not
the case. It’s great to see children caring so much about their
environment and taking such an interest in Brigit’s talk.”
Adam Buckeridge, Deputy Head at East the Water Primary School added,
“Brigit’s bee workshops with the students were excellent. We’re
very proud here that children are taught from an early age about the
importance of their natural environment, and today has reinforced
this message in a fun and interesting way.”
