We're thinking about moving to the Bideford area (maybe around Northam) and wondered if anyone could tell us good and bad things about the area?

Northam is pretty much OK, as is Appledore, and Bideford, however parts of East the Water are iffy and folks from Instow think they're way better than they are and that they own the town.

We moved here a couple of months ago, but knew the place well, since we have family here. It's a great place to live, most of the people are great. There's plenty to do, and loads of great places to visit in Devon and Cornwall.

Dear Seriusblack, my advice to you is to not mention that you have been on housing benefit. The last time we moved house we missed out on a great property because I thought I would mention that we were eligible for housing benefit even though my husband was employed. Some people are bigoted when it comes to benefits and believe that even if you have a job you will wreck the place if you don't earn much money! Well, in this area it's hard to earn the 'average wage' and lots of people need top ups from the council. This area is great to live in. The rents are reasonable and there is lots to do and see. I would go for it if I were you and come back to this website to find out from the local people what is going on.

My family and I are considering moving to the area if my husband gets offered the job that he went for, the only problem we have is renting , we do not have a large deposit as we have been on hb for 6 months although we wouldnt be on it when we get there. We are a very clean and considerate family who require a three/four bedroom house we have a couple of cats who are very well behaved. Is there anyone who can help us? Thanks Helen

Thanks for your response - I just had a sudden panic when I saw the council's mention of young disadvantaged people with social problems moving to the area - don't fancy living near a load of druggie dossers as we had that previously in the UK!

    bonjour frenchfleury,
I moved to Bideford 19 years ago from worcestershire, and have never looked back. It is a beautiful part of the country, great to be so near the sea and lovely beaches, also the moors, exmoor, dartmoor, bodmin. We have the tarka trail for walkers and cyclists, free of traffic to explore the lovely scenery. Bideford has a charm all of its own, and the customer service you talk about - well yes, you`ll get that here, we have local shops and also an outlet shopping centre aswell as a pannier market. Bideford has plenty of pubs and a varied nightlife, but basically the `rowdyness` you mention is only what you`d expect after the nightclub closes and pubs turn out at the end of the night, you`d get that in any of a number of similiar towns. northam is a lovely area, with the popular northam burrows, local swimming pool, golf course, which joins a fabulous beach at westward ho!. Come here and you won`t regret it, house prices are varied depends on what your after, but there is a good choice and will suit all pockets. Our main hospital is at nearby Barnstaple, but we also have a smaller hospital here too. As for the weather, well its England you take what you get, but come rain or shine, its a great place to live.
