Illegal dumping of animal body parts at Hartland near Bideford prompts warning from Trading Standards and Police.

Following four separate incidents of illegal dumping of livestock carcasses and body parts around Hartland Devon County Council's Trading Standards Service and Devon and Cornwall Police are issuing warnings to those who might be tempted to avoid using the proper methods of disposal.

If dead farm animals are not disposed of correctly there is an increased risk of the spread of animal disease.  Failure to follow correct procedures is a criminal offence which can incur fines of up to £5,000 and up to two years in prison.

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council Cabinet Member responsible for Trading Standards said:

“We take these matters very seriously and the above incidents are being investigated.

"Illegal dumping of carcasses spoils the countryside for all who use it and is grossly irresponsible as it risks spreading animal disease, which can seriously threaten the local farming economy.

"I would like to remind keepers of livestock that failure to dispose of animal carcasses in an authorised manner may lead to prosecution.

"If anyone has information that will assist Trading Standards Officers in their enquiries, please contact us.”

It is the legal responsibility of the animal owner to dispose of any livestock that dies and where the owner cannot be identified, it then becomes the responsibility of the landowner.
