TV Producer Ted Oakes will be screening an episode of the recent BBC2 series “The Bear Family and Me” at the Plough Arts Centre in Torrington and talking about how the programme was made.

He will be answering questions about this exciting adventure with wild black bears in Minnesota, USA. Ted, himself is a native of Canada, but has had a home in North Devon for the past 20 years.

Ted Oakes is keen to talk about these much maligned bears which he and his team found are generally misunderstood and surrounded by Hollywood myths.

Cameraman Gordon Buchanan and his own family spent a year in the

forests of Minnesota filming these amazing, notorious animals. The first

challenge was for everyone to face their demons; black bears attack more people than any other bears in the world. However, once Ted and Gordon met “Lily”, an easy-going young mother bear and her cub “Hope”, the team’s attitudes and fears changed dramatically as the story unfolded.

This is a rare opportunity to find out how this series was made

and the lessons learned by the team from working with the American

black bears. Inspirational!

Tickets are £6 each and the proceeds are in aid of the Hartland Wildlife

rescue and The Plough Arts Centre.

This series was indeed inspirational, unfortunately I am not able to attend. Even if you did not see the series. I am sure it will come across in this talk. I am not normally a nature programme watcher, but this was excellent.
