Bideford - Wetherspoons?!!
By Jut2000 | Tuesday, November 16, 2010, 18:04
Is it true that Wetherspoons are to open in Bideford? I seriously hope so as Bideford needs investors to move in, not only to allow Bideford to join the 21st Century but to bring employment opportunities for local people. There is a blatant monopoly going on in this town and obviously these same and/or associated people sit on the council blocking any outward investors only for their own interest and not the local community. By allowing investors, albeit high street names, will allow Bideford to prosper further. Of course we don't want Bideford ending up like every other town frontage but by opening it up will bring in people/consumers and thus allowing for greater employment opportunites. With Bideford's heritage, it's architecture and river frontage it has huge potential. Is it not time that local people were heard and not governed by these monopolies that are holding back Bideford from it's potential?!!

Well today I hear the rumour that it is actually Whitbread who may be moving into Bideford with plans of a Premier Inn and pub. The Whitbread brands are: Costa Coffee, Premier Inn, Beefeater Grill, Brewer's Fayre plus Table Table and Taybarns (which I've never heard of).
So if they are planning a Premier Inn does that mean building a new hotel or taking over an existing one? Also, do we want a generic pub/coffee shop/whatever in Bideford?
New businesses mean new jobs but what about the character of Bideford? Do we need this?

ReportApparantly it is going to be situated where Fitness m8 was which, coincidently is owned (the building) by Braddicks - so i've heard! I hope that it does go ahead as Bideford is needing this investment for the local economy. On this note, It's also interesting to hear from local people on the street that they feel that Bideford is starting to slip downwards!! Also, people i know are saying that now prefer to have a night out in Barnstaple and even though they have to travel further they feel that Barny has more to offer and that Bideford has lost some of it's fun-night-out feeling due to thuggish, loutish behaviour - again it would appear the minority are spoiling it for the majority. However, most towns are probably the same it just that Bideford's nightlife is concentrated in a small area so anti-social behaviour is appears enhanced - who knows?!! And here we are wanting another boozer!! ;-)
