ReportIs there still a bath race at the water festival?
I can remember many years ago my husband and daughter being asked to enter the bath race. It involved getting in a bath (plug in) which had wooden outriggers and then rowing the boat to the middle of the estuary and back.
I was against the idea of them entering the race as they stood little chance against the burly men who had already entered and were stood at the water edge waiting for the starters gun.
The steward asked what the bath was going to be called - I said "stupid" and he promptly wrote it down - wanting to get the race started with a full starting gate.
The starters gun went off and the other teams were in the water, while my poor husband struggled to get "stupid" down to the water, with the help of our petite daughter.
However strategy was the name of the game and whereas the other baths rowed to the marker in the centre of the estuary, my husband and daughter rowed up stream and let the tide take them down and around the marker.
By the time they had reached the centre of the estuary they were in the lead and only had the return stretch to win the prestigious trophy!
I was on the bank, (on my own) shouting "come on Stupid" repeatedly at the top of my voice - much to the amusement, I am sure, of the people around me.
We still have the trophy at home after all these years and it still brings a smile to my face whenever I clean the back of that cupboard!!

ReportThe races are on - am so going to win one of these this year. Dare you all to enter!!! Do we get to stop off at the 8 pubs! LOL! Sounds like a great day. The more the merrier and we can help those named charities out, especially in times like these.
