To a fanfare from the Bideford Town Band, Bideford’s new Carnival Queen Pia Short-Luongo will be crowned by the Mayor of Bideford Cllr. Phil Pester on the balcony of the Bideford Amateur Rowing Club at 6pm to officially start the carnival festivities.
The procession, with the theme of “Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales”, leaves the Pill Car Park, goes onto the Quay and along Bridgeland Street, North Road, Lime Grove and Belvoir Road before returning to the Pill via Abbotsham Road, High Street and the Quay.
The Bideford Town Band, Samba Sol and lots of pipe bands, including the Bideford Youth Pipe Band, will be providing music and local Majorette troupes will be in competition during the carnival. The organisers would like to point out that most of the pipe bands will only be playing in the lower part of the town, “so if you like to hear bagpipes come down to the Quay” said Carnival Organiser Mike Harper. The proceeds from the carnival will be going to local charities.
The afternoon starts will a display of cars from the North Devon Sports & Classic Car Club on the Quay from 4.00pm.
The carnival will be followed by the now traditional Massed Pipes & Drums. Pipe Bands will be marching on the Quay playing traditional tunes before finishing with the ever popular finale of Highland Cathedral.
The day finishes with a spectacular Firework Display at Bank End at approximately 9.30pm.
