There is archive footage of the collapse online from the British Pathe archives: tinyurl.com/ycno9pk
As part of the Movie Bus Project we're going to digitise long unseen footage of this and other historic local events from the collections of the South West Film & TV Archive to show at screenings across the local area. Please see the story I posted about the Movie Bus Project for more deatils, ( tinyurl.com/ygq5jeb ) or get in touch for more information or to get involved!

That is fascinating footage - brilliant! It must have been quite scary at the time. I wonder if the bridge was closed? Did people boat across if it was?

This was really interesting - so interesting in fact, that I stayed on the site and looked at loads of old footage!
Like A_McCormack I would love to hear from anybody who lived around Bideford when all this happened - How did people get out of Bideford? or more importantly, in to Bideford?
I also looked at footage of the horse racing in Bideford - where on earth was that held?
Loved it!!!!!!

I dug deeper for information on the horse racing. Likeyou Philippa I was enthralled by that site and watched the lady jockey clip too.
I'm pretty sure the "big field" racetrack in Bideford was Northam burrows.
Anyone know any more about this?
