A DOCTOR who had a vasectomy after it was given him as a gift is offering to perform the same procedure for the highest bidder at an auction 13 years later.

Dr Robin Buckland, of Northam surgery in Bideford, was given the vasectomy via his wife by his medical colleague Dr Nick Markham who works at North Devon District Hospital.
Dr Markham's wife won the vasectomy at an auction but he decided to give it as a gift to Dr Buckland.
At the time of the auction it was not known who the vasectomy had ended up being performed on. But when Dr Buckland was approached to offer a vasectomy as an auction prize later this year, he revealed his own operation had come about in a similar way.
Anne Tattersall had asked Dr Buckland to be involved in the auction she is organising for Women's International Day to be held on March 8.
She had almost given up hope when she had not heard back from him for a few weeks.
But after phoning the surgery and speaking to Dr Buckland he agreed to he would be happy to offer a vasectomy at the auction to raise money for North Devon Hospice and The Plough Arts Centre.
"When Anne asked me to do it I laughed," said Dr Buckland. "She was delighted. It is unusual but it lends itself quite well to the cause. If I can help in any small way I will do so.
"I am always very open about the fact I have had a vasectomy. Mine was done 13 years ago. I was consulted and it was all done properly. I had a very good surgeon.
"It was my medical colleague who had given it to my wife as a gift so I went through with it. I was planning to have a vasectomy that year anyway.
"It certainly made me make up my mind.
"I thought if my friends had raised the money I had to go through with it.
Dr Buckland estimates he has performed in excess of 2,000 vasectomies over a 20 year period but says whoever wins the procedure will have to go through the normal process, which involved being referred by their GP.
He added: "The cost of a vasectomy is in the £300s. If I am offering it, part of it is it has to be right for the individual. They would have to be referred by their GP."
The auction will take place at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrignton on March 8 from 7.30pm.
