It was deathly quiet in the car park at Bideford College at 8am this morning - the deadline for the release of the school's all-important GCSE results.

But what a difference an hour makes!

By 9am the GCSE students (many with anxious parents) were filing in to the newly-built school hall pick up their exam results in person.

Top scoring student was Meghan Townshend (pictured) who picked up a staggering 12 A grades; five of which were the coveted A*

Meghan, 16, who has been working part-time in a bookshop at Atlantic Village over the holidays, will go on to study English Lit, Biology, Chemistry and History at the school's sixth form after the summer break. She's keeping her career options open at the moment, thinking she might aim for something in the world of nursing but tonight, it's party time and she'll be celebrating her fantastic results with friends at a surprise dinner in her honour in Bideford.

Other top scorers included Rebekah Chatfield, 16, a keen scuba diver who scooped nine A grades (three A*) an who is aiming for a career in marine biology in Malta (spot the clue in her T-shirt in the group picture in our gallery photos) and Lauren Cudmore, 16, who is planning to study criminimal psychology when she gets to Uni after her A levels.

Flautist, Gemma Williams, who scored six A grades and who lives with her family in Westward Ho! is planning to study art and psychology at A level and Alice Allin, another top scorer with an impressive ten A grades (x4 A*) is heading towards a career in medicine so well done and good luck to her.

We'll be posting the school's own official report on their GCSE results later today - so check back for that - and in the meantime, big congratulations to all the Bideford College students who got their results today.

Well done, of course, to the top scorers but for those who didn't get quite the results they hope for...don't despair....because when it comes to the choices you make in life things (as your parents will probably tell you) have a funny way of working out....and what counts today is the effort you all put in!
